Senior Project Reflection

1) The thing I am most proud of with my senior project is I really got to learn about diabetes. I got to learn it and teach my dad some things that I learn that he never knew before. He learn a lot of new recipes and exercise to help him with his diabetes. I love working with different patients and getting to know them. It was a get way to get started on the field I want to go in later. Another think I am proud of is all the research I did on diabetes because it help me a lot with answering my EQ and understanding the best way to control the diabetes.
2) I think I did really well on my presentation so I would say AE because As i taught my topic people were really interested and stood focus. I didn't have someone look at me with confuse face or feel sleepy. When I did my activities there know everything I taught them. It show that they really understood what i taught them and how they can teach others. I felt like I really did great on my presentation and got everyone on the edge of there feet on the topic. I wanted everyone to understand that diabetes is a serious condition and you want to watch your food intake.
B) For my overall project I would say AE because I did work really hard with the Senior Project. I out a 110% in my Interviews, independent comps, and presentations. I love my senior topic so I interview many people and got more involved with Diabetics. I listen to them and talk to them one on one. I always did more research to help me with my EQ and really help my paper. I help my family along the way with all there eating habits. I wanted to show my dad there is more food he can eat out there then just bad food. I got involved in walks, fundraisers and American Diabetes Assocation convention. I always help out with anything that had to do with diabetes and encourage them to work hard to live. I got to do stress threpary groups and listen to things they wont tell there families. I got to really boned with my patients during my senior project.
3)

  • Interviews
  • Independent Comp 1
  • Working Bib
  • I- Search paper
  • Exit interviews
  • Share out of answers
  • Service Learning
4) What didn't work for me was the 3 Column Chart because I felt it was a repeat of my answer over and over. It didn't really need to be there it was more like a outline but i really didn't understand why we had it.

5)In the future I want to be a RN and then move up to a nurse protector because I love to help people. During my service learning at Casa Colina I work with many nurse and they love the way I was always on top of my things. They understand I am a hard worker and I finish the job. My interviews help me get to know more about the patients and how the medical field works. I got to really see how it helps me with the whole Patient development. I never really like to open up with my self but working their help me understand them. I also got a lot of information because of my service learning and I landed a Job. The staff knows who I am and know I am a hard worker.

What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
  • The most important thing I gain from experience is working with the patients and really understanding them. I got to talk to diabetic patients and really listen to what they have to say and work with them to make there life fun. I got to grow closer to them and teach a lot about me topic with Jo Ann Schultz as my mentor. I also got to talk to doctors and learn all about Casa Colina. The reason why is because every time I got there I did my patient rounds. I visit them and saw how they are doing. Sometimes they were discharge so I never got to say good bye I meet new patients all the time. I got to help those in need when they need me so I like that on my job. It would be patient development because I really got to grow closer with them also learn how to talk to people. So I gain people skills and presentation development. Jo Ann always made me talk and show new volunteers around and show them all the drills.
   Applied
How did what you did help you answer your EQ?  Please explain.
  • I got to learn about diabetes from my service learning with Jo Ann. I got my answers from patients there and observing them and see what make there sugar raise. I really got to see all the effects of all the patients. I talk to them and got to do yoga classes and learn new things. Jo Ann would give me answers and tell me what good and bad. I got to use the patients to really make those answers true. I got to really find different activities that go with that answer. When Jo Ann did here diabetic class she explains everything. She explains what causes it and ways you can prevent it. Also when I research it pop up and everything is really made the answers truer. I think it’s more because of the patients because I got to see what happen of I talk about this or do this. I would change this up and see what happens also tested it on my dad.

A)    “I, Lucy Arellano, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
B)    For my independent component 2 I decide to take care of a diabetic person. I wanted to help them with the process of losing weight, stress levels, and excise. I wanted to be there hand on hand to help them. I met there family and they let me help them and showed me what they ate. I excise with them helped them cook. I was there to do yoga and it helps me with my EQ to show me if it really works. Everything that we did it helps them to lose weight. I want to observers two patients and do different things and see which one loses the more weight.  I got to see their sugar go normal and feel so must better. They were really happy to have lose weigh because they felt their condition under control. this is what I wanted to make sure that their condition is under control to not have that extra pressure. I also talk with them and felt thee pain. They told me things like they were sad and they didn’t thing they can lose the weight. I told them we can do it but you have to get your family involved. I knew with all the talking they were going to have a lot of fun. I explain to them what they can eat and put them on a low carb diet. They loved soda so little by little we got rid of the soda and push it aside. They started to drink a lot of water and love it.
Interpretive:
Defend your work and explain how the significant parts of your component and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.
A)     I worked with one patient two days out of the work and did everything with him. I did the excising and show him how to cook. I went o nutrition class with him and they taught us what to eat. I also talk to him when he was down because he needs someone to talk to. I knew this person already and he wanted me to help him on the way so I did. He wanted to lose weight and control his diabetes. We weight him every weight to see if he lose or gain. I also took notes with the six weeks that I went. I wanted to test out if my 3 best answers would work and they did. The first patient loses 15 pounds in 6 weeks. My second patient Lost 13 pounds in 6 weeks. They went down pant size and t shirts size. There stomach started to shrink and ate less. I did they hobbies with them to clam there stress and even took picture on what we cooked or eat. I also took pictures of me working pout because I cant show picture of him but it was fun.  I type up all my notes and stats reports and pictures. I also show the calendar when I went them. I still see them everyday because I want to see how they are doing still.

Applied

How did it help you answer your EQ?  Be specific and use examples.
B)    First I did the Cardio which one of my answers is cardio because it gets the heart pumping. For a person with type 2 diabetes they want to get the heart pumping. I did aerobics with them and they sweat it out. They sugar was under control and not whacky. Also it helped them to lose weight so that they can control there type 2 diabetes. They took all this medication and they only had to take a few now. It also got them to start drinking a lot of water because they wont drink water. I also did the stress reliever. Everything I wen they had somehitng to worry about so we did yoga to make them feel good. I wanted them to stay in there happy place. They wanted to feel in piece. Showing that yoga can be a goo stress level reviler. A person with type 2 diabetes mostly go for stress test and found out with the yoga body is doing great. Also I did the low carb diet to show them what they should be eating. I had them on a tight control diet. I mean like they can only eat what was on the schedule to eat nothing more. I made sure that there family follow it to because it would help the diabetic people out to. They weigh in every week so it will show if they follow it or not.  By doing this it prove that my answers are really good and it that excising can help out a lot. This is why its my best answer and it help me out in my 2 hour.

Helping 2013

1) What ideas do you have for your senior project and why?
  • Dance- She told me that she wanted to get back into it again. She wants to re learn everything and just kept all she learns. She also told me that she had service learning because she has connection to her old dance studio.
  • Forensics- This is a career she wants to purse and loves the topic. Her mother knows someone that can help her with her service learning.
Feedback:
·          I told her that’s good you know what you want to do. Most people just have ideas or really don’t want to do it. I also told her that mostly every senior has problems with service learning and finding a great EQ. I told her that to make sure she starts in the summer with all the research and make sure you want to do it. I told her that senior project is your baby and you have to stay on top on your topic.
 (2) What do you plan to do to complete the 10 hours of service learning (working with an expert) which is due prior to senior year starting?
  • She told me that she plans on working at her dance studio with a her dance teacher. She is a lot of expert and owns the studio also has been dancing for a lot time. Even for her second topic she knew what she wanted to do.
  • I told her that’s good you know what you want and just to start during the summer with service learning so that you have extra expects. Even though your hours don’t count until after.
(3) What do you hope to see or expect to see when watching the class of 2012 present their two hour presentations?
  • She told me that she wants to see variety of presentation like different. She hopes that by watching she can get ideas on what she wants to do. Also she wants to see how they are really going to go. She hopes that she can get many ideas or maybe more possible topic to have in mind.
What suggestions did give them regarding how they should approach watching the 2 hour presentations?
(4) What questions do they have about senior project?  What additional recommendations would you give the 2013 student about senior project?
  • I told her that senior is not that hard if you kept on top of your things. When something due make sure you kept on top of it because then you are going to be stress out. You want to make sure that you don’t turn in anything late because then you have to keep on top of that. Also to make sure that you do a lot of research. She wants to have a lot of evidence to back up her best answers. Also it will come in handy when you want to write your I -search paper. It good if you have a lot of experts because then you will know your topic very well and it can help you for your exit interview.
  • What is the Two hour presentation?
You have 30 mins to set up and then you presentation but you have a time. You can only talk for 30 mins and you must make the 30 mins. Your 30 mins starts when you talk about your foundation and that’s the 20 mins presentation that you will do. You just wan to make sure that you practice because then you can know your time. You want to hit that thirty min mark so you don’t have to do it over again.
What is the exit Interview?
The teachers interview you and let you know if your three answers are great. You don’t want to have general answer because then it will be bad. They ask you what your product presentation is and why. The product presentation is a skill you developed or important on.
·         I just told her that she wants to get everything approved and stay on top of things.

Answer 3

EQ: What is the best way for a person with type 2 diabetes to manage their condition?

Answer: By having a good nutrition for diabetics it can lead to Healthy life style, less medication, less tried, and really take care of the body.

First an article on nutrition by CNN.Com/health thought it was better then taking medication. Even though you have been prescribe a medication for diabetes it always best to watch what you eat. You can improve your health in a big way by making small changes in the way you eat, adding in a little more exercise, and losing even a modest amount of weight. A diabetes diet is simply a healthy eating plan that is high in nutrients, low in fat, and moderate in calories. The only difference is that you need to pay more attention to some of your food choices—most notably the carbohydrates you eat.
Second evidence is a book called “Type 2 diabetes for beginners” It talk about how a low carbs diet would be best for type 2 diabetes. She explain that her mother loved all the unhealthy things but she can eat sometimes she likes but in small pieces. The more she ate portion size then the better her diabetes was going. As her process went on she knew then and her stomach start to shrink. She didn’t feel that need to eat all the time. Her weight drop and her exercise were way easier for her.
Third piece is WebMD it great because it gives me different meals I can cook for my dad. It helps out with all the good foods. It said that it better to just do little at a time. It wants them to have a tight control and it was good to kept it good. You want to have a great portion size meal. The more you lose weight it can help better you sugar and less stress. Also diabetics have problems with their feet so better circulation in the feet. It would help get the blood to flow better then before.

In conclusion nutrition can help with type 2 diabetes by health life size, cut down on meds, help sugar, blood pressure, and stress. It good if you get the family involved with your cut down so that I can motivate you.

Room Creativity

1. How do you plan to address the room creativity expectation?
My senior topic is on diabetes so I want to make the room look like a doctors office. I'm going to hang black curtains so I can pin up posters of medical things. I also wanted to set the set in fours and put white paper. the white paper and a pillow. and in the middle lollipops. Also going to have a first aid kit there to show them what should be in there for a diabetic. Also going to have a measuring tape to show the height also when they come in to sign their name to make it look like they have an doctors app.

2. What activity ideas do you have for answer 1 or 2?
For my answer 1 it was managing your stress levels. I haven't really thought of an activity for this one yet but i had an idea. My service learning person Jo Ann trying to think of a way I could do an activity that short and fast. For my Second answer it is excising. I'm going to make an obstacle course and it will show different ways you can do cardio. I will split them up in three groups and time how fast they can go with doing eat course. It will be running, jumping, and speed walking. Its to show how to get the heart pumping and going for type 2 diabetes. I will also do some stretching before we start so that they don't pull any muscle. We might even do a light jog just to start off.

Answer 2

EQ: What is the best way for a person with type 2 diabetes to manage their condition?

Answer: My answer 2 is to exercise because with me exercise in your daily routes you can really mange your body and type 2 diabetes. The best kind of exercise is cardio because you want to get the heart pumping so that you can burn off fat.

  • My service learning person Albert Martinez told me about his patients and what he tells them to do in order to maintain there diabetes. He told me that cardio is good for your heart and patients with type 2 diabetes. It gets the blood flowing and it make them lose weight so that they can manage there condition. He told me as his patients lose weight there got there diabetes under control. By under control I mean they had less compilations then before. Type 2 diabetes can get out of hand because you can heart problems, kideny failure, etc... By losing weight it can really reduce even more risk well you have type 2 diabetes.
  • My another source will be from WebMD because they have an article on execrising daily while on type 2 diabetes. They stated that if you just walk, running, speed walk for 30 mins it can be a start to exec rise. Also by reducing the your type 2 diabetes and making you take less medication. If you are a diabetic with blood pressure problems you make lower your condition by exercising. Also said that by being overweight or obese by being type 2 diabetes it can lead to another conditions. It also states that by losing weight it can may get you off the medication that you may not need anymore. It help the type 2 diabetics a lot if they exercise.
  • My last source is JoAnn Schultz she is a nurse who told me about how everyone she exercise and expertly for diabetics. you don't want to have to much fat around the heart because then that will be really bad.  She told me that Cardio and aerobics is really good for type 2 diabetes. people who dont have arms or legs it good to move the legs around. you can always ask your doctor some execrise that you can do for your certain condition.

Well all in all type 2 diabetes people really need to watch their weight so that they don't need. I think its really good for more exercise even its a little bit. people need to think about there body and really know how to mange.

If they want to talk I can be there to listen. When ever they have there exercise I can be there and help them through it. I would cook food that they can eat and show them nutrition facts that i have learn. I want to actually help out with the patient more. I would be working with many diabetes with type 2 diabetes.

Also it gives me chance to really see what is going on in a diabetic life and different ways I can really help them out. If i let them know what going on in there body they will know how to handle it. I know a doctor can tell them this but i can be there to observe and really know my topic more. one on one with the person and really feel there pain or help them out. I can tell them different way to control the diabetes and it can really help me out for my 2 hour presentation.

Here another link to my presentation for my Independent Comp 1:

Literal

“I, Lucy Arellano, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”

During my time with the Nutrition teacher I learn how to count calories, carbs, and what is good to eat and how to cook. During my time teacher he told me to try a diabetic diet plan through the weeks I visit. He told me if it workout then I should use it for a project to see if it really works. I also learn how all the food breaks down and what foods they can eat. I also give a presentation to check for understanding also he show me how to cook. Another day he gave me chicken recipe and told me to try it at home to see if it works. It has no salt in it or sugars of any sort. I add A little spice because my dad loves a little kick. My dad has type 2 diabetes and he loved the chicken. He also showed me what to read on a label. What to watch out for when you are going to buy food. Also the excising I had to do in order to see which one really got my heart pumping. He also gave me textbooks to read that would help out. I also had to follow my plan in order for me to reach my goal. I know Now that I can cook and have no salt in the food. Also learn how to make sugar free Dessert for those diabetics who have a sweet tooth.

Interpretive:

During my nutrition class he gave me different types of diabetes and told me to make a meal plan for them. He told me certain things that they couldn’t eat. This help me out because it give me different foods to list and what to shop for my family. It show me what foods you had to look out for and how to really read a label. He show me how to cook more that home so that I can tell my family what to eat. During my class he wanted me to cook for my dad and meal that was portion size. He made me look at how many ounces I can have and give me a balancer to measure the weight. It was pretty crazy how much you are supposed to eat. It was food made for baby meal. He also give me a text book that I can read online in order to see how the digestive system works. How the food is broken down and what goes in the body. I also read how the carbs can play a big factor. It always show when the fat stores from not eating. Another big project I had to do was make a meal plan for me but I can to follow it for four weeks and weigh my every sun. I had to follow it step by step and do the 1 hour of excise a day. We also learned about the pyramid groups and how it breaks down. What you can have and what you cant have to much of. I learn all this because my EQ  talks about ways to maintain the diabetes. I know now this plays a big part in the actor. I know what they can and cant eat. I show him meals that they can have. I can even show them what kind of sweets they can have and how much of it.

Applied

What you can have and what you cant have to much of. I learn all this because my EQ  talks about ways to maintain the diabetes. I know now this plays a big part in the actor. I know what they can and cant eat. I show him meals that they can have. I can even show them what kind of sweets they can have and how much of it. This is one of my answers and I wanted to know what kind of snacks they can have. Like for example when we were learning about sugar he told me that dark chocolate is really good for liver, blood pressure, heart. They are some care of ingredients in it that makes it good. They say scientists are still testing it but it really good. Now they are saying coffee good for you. Also when I did my Excise I knew that cardio was the one that made me work out the most. It’s the one that gets your heart pumping. Out of all this learning I can go teach other my knowledge and show they can health is very important. I can show them how to read labels and what to cook in my presentation. I can show them no sugars tastes good as to no sugar that all.

Answer 1

1. What is the best way to maintain diabetes?
The best way to maintain diabetes is to Manage there stress levels. If you are a diabetic who has high blood pressure it because you stress yourself out. You want to make sure that you dont stress yourself out to much because it can lead yu into more problems in your body. It can put you in the hostipal because your blood pressure goes up and you will lose curclitaion in the legs and feet.

  • One part of evidence I have is my service learning person JoAnn Schultz answer my EQ for me and she told me what could be an answer for my EQ. Also she told me that I can look at the American Diabetes Association for more on the answer. For example she told me that on of her patient that she takes care of have type 2 diabetes and she had to cut her foot off because it got rotten. She told me that her diabetes got really bad and there was nothing they can do to fix the problem. One of the problems that the lady had was a stressful job and was hospitalize 3 times for high blood pressure because of stress.
  • Another piece of evidence I have is my book that I am currently reading and that is Diabetes Rising. The author Dan Hurley said in the book to watch out for your blood pressure and stress levels." if a diabetic stress level is to high then it can cause may more problems to there body". Dan Hurley was a guy who know all about diabetes and wrote a book on how to keep it under control and how it all started. He wanted to get the word out there.
  • The last piece of evidence I have is a article called 7 ways to control your diabetes. It stated to manage your body. It said to go for doctor visits and to make sure to take care of your body. It said that one of the keys is to stop what you are doing and breathe and think of a happy place. That way your body doesn't overload.
If we don't take care of our bodies and watch out for our sugar levels and manage about body right. then we can be putting our self in danger. We may even go in to a coma if it gets really bad.

Service Learning

1.Where are you working for your service learning?
I do my service learning at Casa Colina.

2. What is your contact?
My Contact is Jo Ann Schultz She is an Rn At Casa Colina. She can be contacted by Phone or email but she does have crazy hours at this point of time. She told me that she maybe available in the morning.

3. Summarize the service you have work to complete the 10 hours?

I have been working with Mrs. Schultz since the beginning of October. She give me research on what diabetes that would help me greatly. Every time she would get something new on diabetes she would give to me to look at.   Also she let me go to patient rooms and check on how they are doing and if they need anything. Sometimes the patient want to talk to me and they tell me everything there are going through. This show me how to treat a patient who is suffing from a long term disease and how to talk to them. By telling the patient everything going to be okay  it shows that I can listen and understand what they are going through. Most of the time I am doing service learning I am with a patient who wants to talk and also follow the nurse and see what they do. I also Talk to to the doctors there and they tell me what they do and what paper work you have to deal with. Jo Ann also has me work with Nikki and she shows me how the schedule work and how to fill in a time card. Also she shows me what I need to learn in order to go into the field I want to go into. She have me do what nurse do and deal with phones and this helps me out because you always want to keep on top of your information for the doctor.
